We’d heard a lot of good things about koh phi phi before we came so were excited for our visit.. we took the 2 hour ferry accross from Krabi to see what these islands had to offer.
There are two islands; phi phi Don and phI phi Lei. Don, the larger of the two is where you stay whereas Lei has alot of beautiful locations you can visit by boat. We had visited in low season, which i was glad about as aparently in peak season you can barely move on the island! We stayed at the sunset view bay in a wooden tree house overlooking the sea. The tree house was basic but nice and we paid £12 per night to stay here which included our breakfast and one free evening meal. The people here were lovely and treated us really well. It was a bit of a walk from the centre but was a good thing as the clubs here go on all night and I’m a right pissy bastard if I don’t get my sleep!
The first morning we set an alarm for 4.45am and hiked up to the islands view points in the dark to watch the sun rise. Paige had never watched the sun rise before and the only ones I’ve seen is when I’ve been cock eyed drunk with my mates! Unfortunately it was pretty cloudy so we didn’t get the perfect sunrise we were hoping for.. we did see some awesome views of the island though!
We explored the markets and shops during the day and had an early night in preparation for another early adventure in the morning. That night there was a fuck off storm that woke us up, the whole tree house was wobbling and it felt as though our windows and doors were going to rip off.. Thankfully they didnt! Paige’s bananas had been dragged into the bathroom and partially eaten.. we were definitely visited by a rat, I can hear the little fuckers scurrying about above the bathroom at night so after that the bathroom door was kept firmly shut. We got up at 5am to do the earliest tour of phi phi Lei mainly to beat the crowds to Maya bay. Our boat arrived there before any of the others just after 6.30 so we had this beautiful beach to ourselves for an hour or so giving us plenty of time to admire the views.. by 8.30 the beach was fucking rammed!
We also visited PhileI lagoon for some snorkling, the viking caves and monkey beach on this trip. I must be a jellyfish magnet as I was stung again at the lagoon. We couldn’t go in the viking caves but were able to get photos and were told about their history and the theory that they were possibly visited by the vikings.. that’s a fucking long flight never mind sailing it! On monkey beach We saw a Chinese woman get attacked by the crazy monkeys as she was trying to get a selfie with a baby monkey.. luckily she was okay and just had a few scratches but whilst being attacked she uselessly flopped on her back screaming for help.. it was absolutely histerical and in my opinion she completely deserved it 😂. The prices of the trips here were pretty high.. a 3-4 hour trip cost us about £25 whereas a similar length trip on the perhentian islands only cost us £6-7 the robbing bastards!
The next day we both booked in tattoos but another big storm took out the power to most of the island for the whole day.. the power came back on at 7pm so we headed to the studio. It was Paige’s first one and she was absolutely shitting herself. We had them done the traditional bamboo way as they’d be fully healed withing a few days, and the guy doing them was shit hot. Paige was amazing and conquered one of her big fears! I’ll let her share her tattoo but shes really pleased with it. I got a leg piece in memory of my grandad who died earlier this year and I’m chuffed to bits with it. My sitting didn’t finish until nearly midnight and somehow I got invited to do a Muay Thai session with the tatto artist and his brother the next day Haha.
So the next day off I went to meet my new friends for a muay thai session! On the way I was pounced on in an alley by some very unnatractive ladies of the night, they commented on how good looking and muscular I was.. of course I already knew this so wished them well and carried on my way! I met Bus and his brother at his tattoo studio and they took me to their gym, which was a lean-too with some heavy bags, muay thai equipment.. and for some reason a fucking horse lol. I spent about 45 mins doing bag work with them where they helped me with my kicking and kneeing which I was pleased with as it needs some work. We spent the last 15 minutes doing some clinch wrestling, which once they explained what I was and wasn’t allowed to do under muay thai rules it appeared I was pretty good at! My strength and bits I’ve learned from wrestling definitely helped here, despite not having done this before they took it in turns to try to overpower me in the clinch. By the end of the session my shins were killing and my feet were cut to fuck from the concrete floor. Really enjoyed it, they were nice guys and definitely took some good tips away from them despite a bit of a language barrier!
Didn’t do much drinking or partying here as our budget was quickly swallowed up paying tourist prices on the island. For me 4 days would have been enough here but we enjoyed our time none the less. Off on the ferry to Koh Pangan tomorrow staying in some awesome bungalows I stayed at on my last visit to Thailand!
